1. Placing 3D in a Photo
I really enjoyed this assignment, once I got the hang of moving the 3D letters around the X, Y, and Z axes. Here is how it was created:
-Downloaded the royalty free image of the forest from Stock Snap
-Opened the image in Photoshop and chose not to crop it to maintain the feeling of smallness that one gets in the woods
-Adjusted the levels by selecting the darkest point and setting it as the black point (which got rid of the blue noise from the filter the photographer used
-Using the horizontal type tool, typed the word “hike” in Futura PT Heavy
-Used the eyedropper to select a green color from the leaves
-Chose new 3D extrusion from selected layer (text layer)
-Adjusted the coordinates of the text to -2 degrees for the X rotation angle
-Moved the text where I wanted it in the scene
-Set the extrusion depth of the text to 20 inches
-Selected the background image, copied it
-Selected Environment in the 3D panel and in the properties panel’s image based lighting, clicked “new texture”
-Photoshop did not allow me to select “clipboard” for the new document so I figured out the dimensions of the current document and applied them to the new texture document
-Went back to the IBL menu and selected “edit texture,” then pasted the background image to the new texture document
-Back to the main document, I adjusted the front inflation material in the properties panel by adjusting the color to yellow, adjusted the shine to 41%, reflection to 60%, and roughness to 100%
-Selected the text > split extrusion
-Rotated and adjusted the letters around the X, Y, and Z axes to create the effect of the word “hike” moving back in the distance in the direction of the trail
-Adjusted the inflation, extrusion, and bevel materials of each letter individually. I changed extrusion material to a yellow to give it a glow from the sunlight in the scene
-Selected infinite light and adjusted the color intensity to 626% and the shadow softness to 30%
-Render
